Sleep disordered breathing problems, such as sleep apnea, occur when the tongue or soft tissues of the throat block the airway. The cause of this compromised airway is often the result of underdeveloped jaws. Functional orthodontics work to keep the airway open and encourage normal breathing as well as stimulate proper jaw development so that the condition of the airway improves and will help promote better long-term health and breathing patterns. This is typically done using custom-made oral appliances.
The oral appliances used in functional orthodontics are worn at night and work by slightly advancing the lower jaw. This promotes natural growth and proper positioning of the jaws, teeth and mouth so that you can not only breathe easily and rest well at night but also avoid the additional future health concerns that can result from sleep apnea.
Functional orthodontics is available for both adults and children, but it is especially beneficial for children. When developmental issues are addressed and corrected early, it is often possible to eliminate the need for future orthodontic treatment, such as braces, and promote better oral and overall health in the child’s future.
