The Art of Flossing: Mastering the Technique for a Gleaming Smile

A radiant smile can improve your appearance but it does require a fair amount of meticulous care and attention to detail.

A radiant smile can improve your appearance but it does require a fair amount of meticulous care and attention to detail. That is where floss comes into the picture. Mastering the art of flossing is a good way to maintain that beautiful smile and even ensure the longevity of previous dental work, like dental crowns.

Building Your Flossing Arsenal

When choosing the floss you use, it is best to opt for waxed or unwaxed floss, whichever you find glides smoothly between your teeth. You may also want to consider additional tools like floss picks or water flossers. They add so much more convenience and can reach places you may miss with just floss alone.

Weaving Floss Into Your Routine

Now that you have your floss, break off about 18 inches and wind most of it around the middle finger of one hand so you have a small section left to work with. Hold the floss between your thumbs and index fingers and gently slide it between your teeth in a sawing motion.

As the floss hits your gum line, curve it into a C shape against one tooth and glide it gently beneath your gum line. Repeat this process for each tooth to ensure you effectively remove plaque and debris.

Flossing to Maintain Dental Crowns

Dental crowns are often used to restore damaged or decayed teeth. So, they require a good amount of care to ensure their integrity and longevity. Flossing plays a big role here. It prevents plaque accumulation around the crown margins and helps you avoid issues like decay or gum disease.

Flossing also contributes to the overall health of your surrounding teeth and gums, which also goes a long way in protecting your dental crowns and other dental work. Flossing helps fortify the foundation on which your dental crowns sit.

When mastering the art of flossing, you are committing to your oral health and hygiene. You are maintaining your smile and ensuring that the investment you have made into your dental care lasts a lifetime.
